24 brave fundraisers recently took on Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s iconic Big One, to raise just over £9,000 (and counting!) to help Alfie’s Squad continue providing peer support for children, young people and their families bereaved by suicide.
From downpours to a mini heatwave, climbers encountered all the weathers as they ascended over 420 steps. Pushing through any nerves, they’ve done a fantastic job to not only collect generous donations but also raise important awareness of the work being delivered with families navigating their grief.
We were over the moon that LFC Foundation was able to join the challenge with team members, Youth and Schools Coordinator, Holly Kinsella and Alfie’s Squad Patron and former LFC goalkeeper, Chris Kirkland. Chris led the way for his particular group and quietly admitted he was “a bit more nervous than he let on”, while Holly showed no fear at all!
Friends and family cheered from down below (in the rain!) and encouraged their loved ones at each milestone up the climb.
Young Alfie, founder of Alfie’s Squad, took charge of looking after people’s belongings and led the cheering. Alfie comments,
“Watching the bags was just as important as the climb I’d say! But seriously, I was impressed how quickly the places got snapped up by people wanting to take on this challenge for Alfie’s Squad, even some of our families got involved. I’m proud of them all, but have to say the young people were definitely the bravest!”
Not only an Alfie’s Squad supporter, Nina Smith is a dedicated researcher and advocate at the forefront of mental health and suicide prevention. Nina adds,
“Although I’m terrified of heights, and getting my hair wet in the rain, I took on the challenge because Alfie’s Squad needs all the support they can get. This is life-saving work, because postvention is prevention and no child should have to face suicide bereavement alone.”
Money raised will help Alfie’s Squad continue running peer support sessions with fun and engaging activities for children, young people and their families, who have been impacted by suicide.
