Each week, Alfie’s Squad welcomes children and young people who have been bereaved by suicide. Through fun and engaging sessions, our young members get the chance to build friendships, confidence, and often new skills.
One recent session took things quite literally, with a Construction Night theme with young members modelling Alfie’s Squad (not-so) hard hats, while getting creativity using a range of building challenges.
Families gave a warm welcome to Gail and Molly from HMS, one of the North West’s leading construction and maintenance companies. They not only brought goodies, helped kit out the young people with their own high viz (some of the adults also had to join in), but they also got stuck into the building games alongside the young ones.
While bringing their ideas to life, young members also learnt new construction terms and techniques along the way. The tables quickly turned though when it was Gail and Molly’s turn to build, and the kids pointed out snags to work on!
While the competition was fierce, we have it on video that young judge Liam gave the final win to Molly. But sources say Liam’s obsession with planes meant that Gail’s non-aeronautical effort never stood a chance!
These kinds of activities are more than just fun, they help our young people try something new, work as a team, and showcase just how creative and capable they are.
Gail Farley, Head of Experience at HMS comments,
“Thanks so much to Alfie’s Squad for inviting us to the construction night. It was great to see the brilliant work they do, and Alfie was such an inspiration! The kids were amazing, and we had a blast building things together! Even though I didn’t win!”
HMS also took the time to chat about their apprentice opportunities, sparking interest of one of our older teenagers who is now considering a future career in consideration. This is a great example of how we’re hoping the sessions can have an even greater impact for our families.
A huge thank you to HMS for your time and generosity!
If you’re part of a business who would like to get involved and enhance future activities or support the families who attend Alfie’s Squad, we’d love to hear from you.
