Alfie’s Squad Fundraising Gala raises vital support for families bereaved by suicide
Supporters from across the North West and beyond recently came together for Alfie’s Squad’s fundraising gala at Titanic Hotel Liverpool, raising vital funds and awareness to support children, young people and families bereaved by suicide.
Our gameshow-inspired evening brought together families, supporters, businesses and sponsors for a night filled with laughter and generosity, with the goal of spreading the word that Alfie’s Squad is helping families not have to navigate suicide bereavement alone.
From the moment guests arrived, the atmosphere was filled with warmth and compassion. Guests kindly took part in raffles, auctions, scratchcards and the magic box returned once again!
Thanks to everyone’s support, just over £10k was raised on the night to help support families affected by suicide. While fundraising was central to the evening, some of the most powerful moments came from hearing directly from the people whose lives have been helped through the charity.
Guests heard from CEO Allison Furlong, co-founder Alfie, and Amy, one of the parents supported by Alfie’s Squad, whose emotional words highlighted the importance of connection and community following suicide bereavement.
Amy and her three children have been part of Alfie’s Squad since the very first session back in summer of 2023, and she shared how the support had transformed their family’s journey through grief.
“After their first session, they made friends and described the group as feeling safe and that they felt happy there. Seeing their smiling faces as they have had some incredible experiences has been absolutely heartbreaking and amazing at the same time.”
Speaking about the parent and carers’ support group, Amy added:
“It’s a sacred space where we can grieve together and support each other, to cry, celebrate the successes and navigate the difficult times together. It has become a lifeline for so many.”
The evening’s brochure showcased just how much Alfie’s Squad has grown since its last fundraising dinner, highlighting increasing demand for support and the growing reach of the charity’s work.
Guests were particularly moved by the story of Zena and her son Liam, who travel significant distances each week to attend face-to-face sessions, which is a reflection of the friendships, support and safe spaces families continue to find through Alfie’s Squad – Read Zena and Liam’s experience through Alfie’s Squad | Supporting children bereaved by suicide
For many guests, the evening also offered a first introduction to the charity and the reality of suicide bereavement for children and young people.
Taking to the stage, 17-year-old co-founder Alfie thanked supporters for believing in the charity’s mission.
“I’m extremely proud that everyone is here believing in what we’re trying to achieve through Alfie’s Squad. Many of you have already helped us support families across Liverpool and Bolton and, thanks to your ongoing support, the message is spreading. We’re hoping to open another Squad later this year, so watch this space.”
The night also brought plenty of lighter moments, with guests embracing the gameshow challenges, cheering each other on and even some good-natured heckling when friend of Alfie’s Squad, Jamie Carragher and his table ended the evening at the top of the leaderboard!
A huge thank you goes to every guest, volunteer, sponsor, prize donor and supporter who made the evening possible. The generosity shown throughout the night will help ensure more children, young people and families can access the friendship, connection and peer support they need after suicide bereavement.
