Young people at Alfie’s Squad never fail to remind us how much potential and hope there is, despite the challenging times.
One of the young members we’re proud of is James, who has turned his own experience of loss into supporting and inspiration for other children and young people.
James, was honoured at the LFC Foundation Community Awards earlier this summer, taking home the ‘Mentee of the Year Award’. The award was presented by one of his sporting heroes, Liverpool legend Ian Rush, a moment James described as “pretty cool”.
Everyone found the nomination that was put forward for James quite moving:
“James exemplifies dedication and leadership, fully embracing his journey from day one with Alfie’s Squad. A standout mentee and regular volunteer, he supports younger participants with empathy and enthusiasm. His mentor describes him as both inspiring and instrumental in their own development into youth work.”
Alfie’s Squad is the only group in the UK providing peer support for children and young people who have been bereaved by suicide. James takes pride in helping the young and new members feel like they are part of something safe and special.
James said:
“This is the first thing I’ve ever won. My mum will probably have to keep it somewhere safe! I’m lucky enough to be able to watch the games too, so being here at Anfield was brilliant. I really enjoy helping the young kids who come to Alfie’s Squad. It’s important they feel comfortable and welcomed to join in all the things we do together.”
James brought his shiny new trophy back to Alfie’s Squad’s recent summer party so the younger children could see it for themselves. It was great to watch how proud they were of their friend. A beautiful reminder that every young person has the potential to do incredible things, no matter what they have been through.
Even more good news
In addition to this recognition, James has also just received confirmation that North West construction and contractor company, HMS, will be welcoming him on their team in September as a Scheduler Apprentice. No doubt HMS have seen that something special in James that everyone here at Alfie’s Squad knew was there already.
All the young people and families from Alfie’s Squad would like to wish James a huge congratulations!
Support from Alfie’s Squad
If your own family or a family you may be working with, has lost a loved one to suicide, children and young people (age 6-17) may want to get involved with the peer support group. Alfie’s Squad provides weekly fun and engaging activities help young members to build friendship and confidence.
Plus, during the young members’ session, the parent or carer bringing them along, has the chance to meet others and chat over a brew in their own support group.
Neither groups are counselling sessions, but Alfie’s Squad works with two Wellbeing Officers, so if the young members needs that extra bit of help, they’re on hand to provide expert support.
Please note that to attend, family’s will need to complete an online referral, and then Alfie’s Squad will be in touch to chat about the details.
